This may relate to some aspect of a Kipling short story (The Phantom Rickshaw?), but I'm not sure--it's been 30+ years since I read SOLDIERS THREE and the other collections.

Oddly enough I read both stories within a few weeks of one another, but I think that it's probably some other story besides TPR that you think might be resonating in your memory. D
