Given twin names\nAgilus/Agia (AGI+), Severian/Severa (SEVER+).  Can we hazard a\nguess at familial naming conventions, at least for the upper classes?\nThea and Thecla, half-sisters: it seems that they are named after\ntheir commonheld parent (THE+).  Valeria, armigette, is possibly\nnamed after ancestor (VALOR) or (VAL+).  Vodalus (VODA+).\n\nAre ethnic roots of names reflected in their bearers?  Abdiesus,\narchon of Thrax, is assumed to be an exultant because of his role as\narchon, and he might be as Persian as the saint he is named after.\nBut is blonde little Dorcas as Semitic as Tabitha?  Oh wait, \"Dorcas\"\nis the Greek form of Aramaic Tabitha (gazelle), so okay, she's a\ngolden haired Achaean.  Well, if =that's= true, then \"Abdiesus\" is\nalso likely Greek, no?\n\nRoche is French.  Merryn is a boy's name.  Malrubius is Latinized\nIrish \"Maelrubba\" (and has a sense of \"red\"); Palaemon is Greek (with\na sense of \"white\"); Gurloes is French?.  Vodalus is Latinized\nScottish.\n\nBack to families:\nBecan (Irish) + Casdoe (Persian?) = Severa/Severian.\nOuen (Welsh) + Catherine (Greek) = Severian/Merryn\n(\"Severity\"/\"Mercy,\" or so I like to think).\n\nQuick--who is the armiger formerly buried in Severian's mausoleum\n(early chapters of SHADOW)?\n\nJust for fun, let's say he is VALOR.  Note that the tomb has =five=\ncoffins, two of which are empty (presumed looted, suggesting that\nthey were the parents).  One or more of the three offspring form a\nfamily which ends in Valeria, the last of her line.\n\n\"Catherine\" the fallen pelerine seems related to Thea/Thecla.  But\nhow?
