          "text": "re \"Ubermenches\" (Ubermenschen in German)\n\nI think Latro and Severian, to take the two most obvious\nexamples, are super because otherwise their stories change\nfrom the ones Wolfe wants to tell.\n\nConsider an ordinary soldier in Latro's situation: he would\nfind his time and attention fully occupied staying alive,\ngiving us a quite different type of story.\n\nAnd thus they must be stronger and quicker. They are handsome\nbecause this means more romance (thematically important for\nServerian), but this analysis doesn't explain why Latro isn't\njust \"ordinary looking\", for example.\n\nAs for smart and perceptive: one of the charms of Wolfe's\nwriting is that he and we both perceive things the protagonist\ndoesn't.\n\nre Salamander and \"things are what they are called\"\n\nThe \"fire spirit\" meaning of salamander is very old; it's\nat least medieval.  So that still fits.\n\nre Severian\n\nI'm re-reading _Shadow_; there's a definite statement by Severian\nthat he had sex with Thecla (about the time of the avern duel), which\nsettles a question which arose here a while ago.\n\nIs the \"Robert\" he meets in the jungle greenhouse Robert Louis\nStevenson?  Was there a \"Marie\" in Samoa with him?  I can't help\nbut think the couple we see is a reference.\n\n\t-John Bishop"
