          "text": "Mantis and Daniel Fusch are quite correct of course\nabout Typhon’s being besieged and ultimately helpless\non his mountain. But I still wonder at the ease of\nthis defeat: his starship captains may have fled, but\nwhere were his loyal robot soldiers, his digitization\napparatus, all the other escape mechanisms he could\nhave called on? Couldn’t he summon even one lander to\ntake him away? Hmm. Typhon of Urth seems oddly\nvulnerable compared with he who built the Whorl…\n\nBut all this is mere speculative detail. What I’ve\nreally been expressing is my conviction that Wolfe\nintended an implicit causal and thematic link between\nthe New Sun and Long Sun cycles. The construction of\nthe Whorl impoverishes Urth; but millions of Urth’s\npeople escape aboard the Whorl to new worlds, avoiding\n(for their descendants) the annihilation brought by\nthe New Sun. This could be read as some compensation\nfor the effective genocide wrought by Severian when he\ncreated Ushas—in the form of Blue, there was already a\nNew Urth elsewhere."
