Is this clutching at straws yet?  JVM says VRT\nlooks/is 16 (Terran) years old.  If \"A Story\" is autobiographical, then as\nSandwalker is 13 (Annese) years old around the time when VRT is 16 (T)\nyears old, then the Annese year is 1.23 Terran years . . . which equals\n10788.922 hours . . . divided by 402 Annese days . . . gives an Annese day\nof 26.838114 hours . . >\n\nThis still seems too short for me. Look: Marsch talks of \"too-long days and\nstretched nights,\" but if we take 26.84 as the length, at the equinox, this\nwould only add about 85 minutes to each of the Earth standard twelve-hour\nhalves, or about 7 minutes \"extra\" to each hour. I'm not sure this would be\ndetectable, at least on a subjective basis, or where a visitor would feel\ncompelled to make a journal entry about \"too long\" days and \"stretched\"\nnights.\n\nVictor looking 16, but being 13, may or may not be an example of how some\nabos seem to be able to control the appearance of their age (e.g., Cassilla\nis only 21, but \"In the bright daylight [the junior officer] could see fine\nwrinkles near her eyes; the girl was aging.\") An adolescent male might be\nmore appealing to John Marsch for a number of reasons over a boyish version;\nhence the rather inhumi-like faceshift Victor may have implemented.\n\nRobert Borski"

          "text": "Let’s not get carried away here, chaps. :-)\nA lack of new buildings may be a consequence of -partial- infiltration\nby the Annese into the human colonies, certainly, but it’s no proof of\nVeil’s Hypothesis. If the abos had replaced the human population, there\nwould be no new anything. Even the most decadent of civilisations\nrequires regular, widespread, daily use of tools. Who printed the\nnewspaper Number Five reads when he is released from prison? Who shoes\nthe horses? Why is VRT’s handwriting so much worse than anybody else’s?\n\nIf Maitre and his family are abos stuck in human form, how come they’re\nall such a dab hand with the scalpel?\n\nI would be more of a believer in Veil’s Hypothesis if Dr Veil herself\nwasn’t the person who comes up with the most compelling argument against\nit. As it is, I remain firmly in the Liev camp."
