"text": "Here's my deduction of who played whom in Dr. Talos's play, based on\nexplicit statements, physical characteristics, and the constraint that no\nactor can appear in more than one role simultaneously. I'm sure many\nreaders of this list have already worked this out, but others may welcome\nit as a useful reference for the present discussion. I will gladly receive\nadditions and corrections.\n\n -- Dan Rabin\n\nGabriel - Dr. Talos\nThe Giant Nod - Baldanders\nMeschia, the First Man - Severian\nMeschiane, the First Woman - Dorcas\nJahi - Jolenta\nThe Autarch - Dr. Talos\nThe Contessa - Jolenta\nHer Maid - Dorcas\nTwo Soldiers - Dr. Talos and Severian [note 1]\nA Statue - Baldanders\nA Prophet - Severian\nThe Generalissimo - Severian\nTwo Demons (disguised) - Severian and Dorcas\nThe Inquisitor - Dr. Talos\nHis Familiar - Severian\nAngelic Beings [note 2]\nThe New Sun\nThe Old Sun\nThe Moon\n\n[note 1] Dr. Talos must be First Soldier and Severian Second Soldier,\nbecause First Soldier and Familiar appear together in a scene. Also,\nSecond Soldier's role requires physical strength (carrying Jahi/Jolenta),\nwhich we know Dr. Talos does not possess (see _The Sword of the Lictor_).\n\n[note 2] I don't think it obvious who plays which demon. Both demons\nappear simultaneously with Autarch/Talos, and Second Demon appears\nsimultaneously with Nod/Baldanders and Jahi/Jolenta. The pair must thus be\nSeverian and Dorcas, but which is which? I favor Severian as Second Demon\nbecause 1) his prophecies in the first demon-scene include the line about\nnatural resources cited in an Epilogue by Wolfe, and 2) Second Demon adopts\nthe stance of a soldier (one of Severian's roles) in the second demon-scene."
