          "text": "Yes, a fine story.\n\nMahes was one of the Egyptian gods\n\n\nhttp://www.touregypt.net/godsofegypt/mahes.htm\n\n\n\n\nMahes\nOther Names: similar to the Furies of Greek mythology being called \"The\nKindly Ones,\" Mahes was rarely referred to by name and was instead referred\nto as \"The Lord of the Massacre.\" His name is also found spelled \"Maahes.\"\n\nPatron of: punishment of those who violate Maat, the universal order.\n\nAppearance: a man with the head of a young lion, often shown carrying a\nknife.\n\nDescription: Another feline deity, Mahes was the son of Bast and Ptah and\nmay be an Egyptian assimilation of the Nubian lion-god Apedemak. When Maat\nwas violated, the other gods would work to set it aright, but Mahes would be\nsent to punish the one who had committed the transgression. Interestingly\nenough, he encompassed his own opposite, and his name was invoked as a\nprotection for the innocent.\n\nWorship: Cult center at Leontopolis, also worshipped alongside Bast at\nBubastis. The Greeks also worshipped him for a time, possibly aligning him\nwith the Furies."

Harry Turtledove et al; no\npublication date set yet. Also: Al Sarrantonio is\nproducing a fantasy anthology along the lines of 999\nand REDSHIFT, and a Wolfe story is slated for that.\n\n--Nick Gevers."
