          "text": "On pp. 178-80 of John Crowley's new novel THE TRANSLATOR, there is a poem\n(actually the first draft of a translation of a poem) written by a Russian\npoet in exile during the Cold War which begins:\n\nIn some worlds my torturer is but a man as I am\nAnd his bosses are men, as well\nAnd their bosses men like me\nAnd the leader a man, a man I myself could be.\n\nThe third stanza is:\n\nIn some worlds my torturer is a being not like me\nAnd his father is a fallen angel\nwhose father is a heedless god\nwhose father is the abyss to whom the leader bows.\n\nAnd the fourth stanza ends with the line:\n\nIn some he never dies, outlives the sun.\n\nIn his LOCUS interview Crowley doesn't mention having read Wolfe; but if he\nreally hasn't read TBOTNS it's a remarkable coincidence.\n\nIncidentally, while I haven't yet finished THE TRANSLATOR, I recommend it\nhighly, although it's quite a bit different from his other novels.\n\n--Adam"
