          "text": "Darryl,\n\nNo, it's not true.  _Operation ARES_, for which\nChristopher Culver is looking (it's because of\nhis message that we're discussing this), is\nWolfe's first published novel; Berkley did so\nin 1970, releasing it as a paperback original.\n_Peace_ is from 1975.  _The Fifth Head of Cer-\nberus_ is older as well, since it was published\nby Scribner's in 1972, though not everyone may\nwish to consider it a novel.\n\nWhat I don't know, of course, is whether Mr.\nWolfe started _Peace_ first, and then left it\nin a drawer for several years before taking it\nup once again.  Certainly the book we have is\nmuch more accomplished than _Operation ARES_,\nand clearly the product of a more mature writer\n--if what I've suggested above is the case,\nthere must have been very extensive rewriting.\n\nMark Millman\n(Nacre)"
