          "text": "In Anatole France's \"Thais\" upon which the opera of\nthe same name is based are found some interesting\ntidbits about our mystery girl.\n\nThais is an actress.\nShe is the daughter of innkeepers.\nThe inn is frequented by sailors.\nHer only childhood friend, father figure and spiritual\nguide, a Nubian slave, was tortured/crucified for a\ncrime he didn't commit.\nShe is deeply afraid of growing old and losing her\nbeauty.\n\nThe historical or biblical accuracy of this rendition\nis certainly questionable, but I wouldn't put it past\nWolfe to have read novel, or be a fan of the opera.\n\nJ"

          "text": "I could well be wrong (twice in one day...) -- I've always associated \nFrance with the whole extended group that included Belloc, Chesterton, \netc., but I can't for the life of me think how I got that impression."
