          "text": "With respect to rats writing, I read that as saying\nthat rats fouled the books with their waste and left\nfootprints, etc.  These tracks and evidences are a\nkind of writing in that one can \"read\" them, gleaning\ndetails of the rat's life.\n\nIn this sense, a footprint means \"I (a rat) was here\".\n\nCheck out semiotics for careful definitions of the\ndifference between a footprint and a drawing of a\nfootprint and so on.\n\n      -John"
