          "text": "I don't know if anyone has remarked on this before,\nbut Michael Curtiz's late-'30s crime thriller ANGELS\nWITH DIRTY FACES, starring James Cagney and Humphrey\nBogart, may very well have been a primary inspiration\nfor the opening of THE BOOK OF THE LONG SUN. There's a\ntall Catholic priest ministering to a\npoverty-stricken, crime-ridden parish; in a prominent\nscene, he plays basketball with the parish boys, to\nwhom he is also teacher and moral guide; gangsters\nhover in the background, threatening (among many other\nthings) the priest's integrity and good moral example.\nIn particular, the basketball match becomes a symbolic\nground on which principles of fairness and honesty are\ntested and perhaps broken...\n\nOf course, the resemblance could be accidental.\n\n--Nick Gevers."
