It's been some years since I've seen the book, but I don't\nrecall being particularly impressed with the illustrations.\n\n(The other worlds I remember being in the book were Tolkien's\nMiddle-Earth, Moorcock's Melinbone, Le Guin's Earthsea, Donaldson's\nLand, and Peake's Ghormenghast. That leaves four more that I can't\nremember, though.)\n\nI know Pippin's question was about \"fan art,\" but there hasn't been a\ntremendous amount of \"professional art\" related to Wolfe either. I complete forgot about this book sitting on one of my shelves. I\nbought it coincidentally about 2 months before I read tBotNS for the first\ntime at a friend's recommendation. Each section has an article by the\nauthors (Malcom Edwards and Robert Holdstock) discussing the topic. It seems\nto be out of print.\n\nHere's a run-down of the topics and the illustrations:\n\nUrth\nIllustrations by Michael Johnson\nThe best fantasy illustrator of all those featured in this book IMO was\nreserved for \"The Book of the New Sun.\"\nMy favorite picture is of the Baldander's castle with the Hierodules' ship\nparked over it.\nIt also includes:\nThe Botanical Gardens\nFather Inire and his mirrors.\nNessus from a distance across the Gyoll. (Not my particular vision of the\ncity but well-done anyway.)\n\nThis topic is actually the last in the book, and the article is decently\ninsightful considering \"Citadel of the Autarch\" had only been released the\nyear before this book's publication. But have you checked out the new Conan comic \nbook, published by Dark Horse? It's written by Kurt Busiek, with art by \nCarey Nord and coloring by Dave Stewart. The art is unlike any comic \nbook art I've seen before -- you could almost describe it as \"raw\" -- \nand I'm really digging it. Everything about the book is amazing in its \n\"channeling\" of REH's Conan, and I would go so far as to say that it \ncompares very, very favorably with Frazetta. They're only up to issue \n7, so back issues shouldn't be too hard to find, and I'm sure a trade \npaperback will be out shortly collecting the first few issues.
