Certainly Gene's parents survived until after the Korean war, as indicated by Letters Home, which are letters Gene's mother saved.  His father probably died before his mother.  There is a non-fiction story called "Kid Sister" in which Gene talks about driving with his mother across country, so she definitely survived into his early middle-age.  He is an only child.
