          "text": "I've now read the new Wolfe mini-collection, STRANGE\nBIRDS, forthcoming from Dreamhaven Books in April.\nIt's 40 pages, $10, and of interest especially for the\nsecond of its two stories, \"Sob in the Silence\", a\nmasterful deconstruction of gratuitously macabre\nhorror fiction. The first piece, \"On a Vacant Face a\nBruise\", is distinctly weird far future SF, about a\nboy joining the circus and redeeming it; it's a fine\nstory, but less focused.\n\nWolfe has another avian story in the May F&SF--\"Bea\nand Her Bird Brother\", an intriguing allegory (as I\nread it) of the schism between humankind's spiritual\nand carnal natures; and forthcoming in the first\n(June) issue of Jim Baen's Universe is \"Build-a-Bear\".\nAnimal themes seem dominant in GW's output at present.\n\n--Nick Gevers.\n\n\n\t\t"
