"text": "Don,\n\nSome personal thinks on \"Soldier of Sidon.\"\n\n1. I find the \"Soldier\" books the hardest to read of all Wolfe's\nwork. I don't know why this should be. Part of it, I suspect,\nis that the artificiality of it is right on the surface; the conceit\nof Latro's memory loss, while poignant and meaningful, also\ncreates a surface reason for Wolfe's usual lacunae, making\nit harder to look for meaning in them (Latro isn't suppressing\nunpleasant facts, he just doesn't know a lot of them), while\nat the same time almost forcing a degree of repetition that is\ntotally un-Lupine. Because of this, the first two are my least\nreread Wolfe novels, and I chose to reread them prior to\nreading \"Sidon,\" and so only got to \"Sidon\" this past month.\n\n2. There was some discussion of \"Sidon\" after it came\nout. I've saved it unread, and will get around to reading\nit soon. Maybe I'll respond to some of it.\n\n3. In many ways, I found \"Sidon\" an easier read than its\npredecessors. Still quite difficult (something about Latro's\nstyle just does *not* fit well into my parser) but easier:\npossibly because I know Egyptian culture/history better\nthan Greek and had less trouble understanding what was\ngoing on.\n\n4. But I just don't find a great deal of meaning in these books.\nPartly, I'm sure, because I struggle just to read them, and\nbecause I've reread them so little; but partly because so\nmuch *is* on the surface. There seems to be very little\n\"hidden stuff\" going on, other than whatever is going on\nwith the gods of various lands bickering with each other.\nBut once you take them as literally existing beings, well,\nthat's what gods of that sort *do*."

Some of the action is confusing, largely due to Latro's \nmemory issues, but for the most part the books roll along with plenty of \naction and intrigue. Unlike much of Wolfe's stuff, they don't seem like they \nshould have a gold stamp on the cover proclaiming \"This Is Literature!\" And \nI don't mean to imply that Wolfe is pretentious - I don't think that he is. \nBut his stuff is deep, and the Soldier books, while they have plenty of depth \nto the story, seem more like they're \"just\" stories to be read primarily for \npleasure."

Wolfe subjects the reader to\nsomething of Latro's own predicament by overlaying the events with the\n\"mist\" of his fictional translation -- e.g., the place names and gods\nare unfamiliar, and Wolfe suggests in the foreword that the\npunctuation and even the words themselves can't be completely trusted.\n Grrr! Throw a dog a bone, will ya? I can figure out the place names\nwell enough, but if only the gods to whom Latro speaks would\noccasionally mention in passing the name by which they might be\nrecognized or googled by a 21st-century reader whose public school\neducation included not one single lesson in the Classics, it would\nmake progress ever so much smoother for me."
