I got my (non-step) mom to read the first New Sun book, but I think she found it too \ncreepy and didn't follow up with it. I'll have to suggest the other stuff to the rest of my family. I admit I was feeling a little out of place. \n\nI am 27 years old. I'm female. I live in the Chicago area. I go to the library once a week and keep a notebook with me at all times for writing down good book suggestions. \n\nI never heard of Gene Wolfe until I went to see Neil Gaiman about three years ago. Mr. Wolfe was the special guest. If anyone has seen him speak, you will know why I was so interested. I ran right out to get a one of his books. I picked up \"Pandora, by Holly Hollander\" of all things!\n\nMy favorite Wolfe books are the Soldier series. And I consider trying to understand Peace to be a labor of love (I'm still mulling over your comments, Mr. Tallman!)\n\nI am loving Steve Brust lately. Me, among others. Although I only post very rarely, and never, \nso far, anything particularly insightful. I've only read TBotNS once, \nin 2003, and feel it needs several readings before I can start \ntalking about it in an intelligent manner; haven't had time to \nre-read it with the attention it deserves since then, alas. Will \ndefinitely do so after I've finished university, which will be \nsometime in 2009.\n\nSort of OT, but... if anyone around here is also interested in \ncomics, I'm writing my M.A. thesis about some comics who I feel share \nsome of the depth and strangeness of Wolfe's creation, although \nthey're very different on a philosophical/ideological level. Now for the \nseriously weird:\n\nDonna Barr: everything she's done, i.e. The Desert Peach, Stinz, \nHader and the Colonel, Bosom Enemies, Afterdead\n\nI haven't found any really comprehensive review yet, so I have to do \nthis myself:\n\nDonna Barr's been producing comics for decades now, and they're all \njust *barely* this side of totally insane - and fascinating, in a way \nthat's often disconcerting. In many cases I still don't entirely know \nwhat I actually think about them. Which is a definite parallel with \nGene Wolfe's work, for me! Donna Barr's world is filled with \nfictitious gay brothers of famous Wehrmacht generals, people who \nunexpectedly turn into horses, centaurs who fight in some close \nanalogue of the First World War, rabbits who want to turn human and \nbefriend harpies... not to mention that her latest work, the webcomic \nAfterdead, unites all these unusual characters in a world that is \neven more bizarre, namely some sort of far-future/life-after-death \nversion of the Third Reich.\n\nAll of which sounds as if it's carefully designed to offend just \nabout everyone. And really, it's incredibly hard to recommend these \ncomics without going 'no, no, no, it's *not* like you think!' all the \ntime. Especially if you haven't figured out what you think yourself, yet.\n\nThey're... *challenging* comics, on a number of levels, which come \nfrom a deeply personal, deeply idiosyncratic place. And, really: \nthey're not like you think.
