I recently stumbled across this info while reading a bio of Meriwether
Lewis.

When Lewis was wintering in St Louis, the first shipment of natural history
specimens he sent to president Jefferson contained a sample of the Osage
Orange tree. Regarding the Osage Orange, Lewis wrote "So much do the savages
esteem the wood of this tree for the purpose of making their bows, that they
travel many hundred miles in quest of it".
