"text": "I just caught this, wondered what you guys thought of this.\n\nNear the end of Citadel, Dr. Talos is granted an audience with Severian. He gives him a coin, one he never got to give him before they went to the gate. It was a false coin just like the one Vodalus gave Severian in Shadow, in the necropolis.\n\nHowever, not only that, but it has some other similar characteristics...\n\nVODALUS'S COIN:\n\"He laid something in my palm: a small coin so smooth it seemed greased.\"\n\nTALOS'S COIN:\n\"I flipped the coin and caught it. It felt as though it had been lightly greased.\"\n\nBOTH COINS:\n\"I was looking at the two coins. They had the same brassy shine and appeared to have been struck in the same die.\"\n\nThis brings up two questions to me...\n\n1. Who dropped the false coin at the play that night?\n2. Is this possibly the same coin?\n\nHethor springs to mind. He was the one who interrupted them the morning after the show, at least, and he was a visitor in the crowd at Severian's first beheading at least once before.\n\n...ryan\n\nP.S. I wondered where the passage was that led people to assume it was the Old Autarch's face on the front, and not Tzdakiel's. Anyone?"

In the third chapter of SHADOW, when he\nfinally looks at the coin he got from Vodalus, he sees what he at first\nthought was a woman's face on the obverse. And in the last line of the\nchapter he says the face is androgynous, which is how the Old Autarch is\noften described. Put that together with the fact that Sev's face was on the\ncoins when he was autarch, and Valeria's face was on the coins after she\nbecame the ruler, and one must conclude that the androgynous face on the\nVodalus coin was that of the sitting autarch. At least so this one\nconcludes. And I won't argue it; I'm just answering the question since,\nIIRC, this is the second time you have asked it.\n\n-Roy"

"text": "The only thing I'm sure of is that Severian often goes to great lengths to conceal what he looks like when he sees himself. The flaw in my positing the face being Severians is that he is not androgynous, and Vodalus would have known him probably. I didn't get the sense that Vodalus was in on the divine plan for Severian to become Autarch.\n\nI was trying to reconcile two things at once, 1) The title of the chapter, it's definitely an \"Autarch's Face\". Which rules out Tzadkiel. But which Autarch? I wondered whether Severian might not be rendered asexual as well, meaning he might not recognize himself at once, but surely he would later. He mentions something along those lines for sure:\n\n\"It seemed beyond explanation - so much so that at the time I did not even trouble to speculate about it, so sure was I that any speculation would be fruitless.\"\n\nHe's reacting to seeing the ship on the back, but something stirs inside him, in a manner similar to the feeling he had in the Atrium of Time, as though someone were watching him, which I took to mean the future Severian who revisits that same courtyard at the end of Citadel.\n\n...ryan"
