But, the last few volumes seem to\nimply that an underwater civilisation is actually present."

          "text": "Jonas definitely seems to think that the monsters are for real and\neven seems impressed that Severian understand that they're genuinely\nhuge.  Typhon claims to sense their presence and seems to think that\nit won't be too much trouble to bend them to his will.  Didn't one of\nMantis' theories tie into this?  That the monsters are the descendants\nof the monarchists or something?  So the \"villains\" want to extend\ntheir own lives, either through replacement bodies or contiued\ngrowth.\n\nDoes Severian hear their footsteps in the mine?\n\nI've certainly toyed with the idea that the monsters of the deep were\n\"mythical\" or even a deliberate ruse.\n\nRe: URTH MUSIC\n\nThe soundtrack I hear in my mind probably resembles the song \"Venus in\nFurs\" by the Velvet Underground, minus its silly lyrics.  The song\nitself is a slow-building, distorted drone with a traditional sounding\ntune, played on (among other things) an electric viola strung with\nelectric guitar strings.  Something about the notion of \"repetition is\nchange\".  I also imagine something akin to Indian Classical music,\nboth due to its droney qualities as well as the unfamiliar 1/4 tones\nand whatnot.  I imagine something quite different from Western scales\nand modes, perhaps like Harry Partch's 43-tone scales or something.\n\nD"
