          "text": "Folks - \n\nLike many of you, I'm in the middle of re-reading both BotLS and BotSS\nin tandem (which isn't all that odd to do) and in addition to all the\n\"ahh, *I* see\" moments, I found myself idly noticing something that\nseems a little unusual to me: Wolfe's characters variously curse,\nargue, fight, change clothes, wash, go to the bathroom, drink and take\ndrugs, but the one thing no character in these books does is smoke.\nNo pipes, cigars, chillums or cheroots appear in any of these books.\nAm I right?  I doubt if it means anything, but I can't help but wonder\nif it was deliberate.\n\nShellac\n\n\n*This is WHORL, for discussion of Gene Wolfe's Book of the Long Sun."
