          "text": "I'm a long-time reader (all of Urth & Whorl archives, \nLong/New/Short Sun multiple times) and have posted once \nbefore.  I'd like to make a few observations:\n\nRe Catholics:\n\nI was raised Catholic, but have been a Militant Agnostic \nsince I was 13 in 1967.  You don't have to be a believer \nto appreciate the power and resonance of Mr. Wolfe's use \nof mythology, even current mythology to which he \nsubscribes.\n\nI found the definition in the newsgroup \nrec.arts.sf.written (I think):\n\nAn Agnostic says:\n\n\"I don't know whether or not there's a God.\".\n\nA Militant Agnostic says:\n\n\"I don't know whether or not there's a God.  And neither \ndo you.\"\n\nThoughts on Short Sun:\n\nI liked it, overall, but I think some of the criticisms \nposted here are valid.  Specifically, did the exposition \nhave to be so damn oblique that many of the very \nknowledgeable people here disagree about what happened?\n\nWere Silk's injuries caused by an attempted suicide or a \nfight?  Both viewpoints have been argued here and I'm \nstill not sure which I believe.  I prefer a fight, since \nI just don't see sufficient motivation for Silk to \nattempt suicide.  He seems more aware than that.\n\nI also agree with those who deplored the fractured \nlocution of Wijzer, Olivine, etc.  It began to wear thin \nafter a while.  Especially Olivine.  \n\nThere was some discussion here of what was meant \nby \"There is another possibility, which I am loathe to \nmention\" but no one suggested anything other than the  \n\"Silk as inhumu\" theory, which I don't buy.  Wouldn't \nthat mean that Silk hatched from an egg?  Nah.\n\nAt the same time, that line just BEGS for some analysis \nand speculation.  I can picture the smile on Gene's face \nwhen he wrote that.  \n\nI'm sure it means something, but I don't know what.  Any \nideas?  You people are really good at this.\n\nQuick question:  Does anyone know who originated the \nsaying \"The more I know people, the more I like \nanimals.\"?
