          "text": "As list administrator, I decree that discussion of\nWolfe's views on lamarckism is acceptable as long as you pay\na Lamarck Tax of 200% in Long Sun content.  In an attempt to\n*forestall* extended discussion:\n\nLamarckism, according to American Heritage Dictionary:\n    The theory that adaptive responses to environment cause\nstructural changes capable of being inherited.\n    After Chevalier de [[Lamarck]] (1744-1829), its\nformulator.\n\nThere's an interesting page about Lamarck at\n\thttp://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/history/lamarck.html\n\nThe discussion on this page gives Lamarck's ideas the\nbenefit of the doubt, and, I think, shares Wolfe's view that\nLamarckism, while wrong on the details, is a useful metaphor\nto describe the some of results of Darwinian natural\nselection.  But Wolfe would rather make bold pronouncements\n(\"We done Lamarck wrong,\" or \"The gods of the Greeks really\nexisted\") without explanation.\n\n\nQuestions or problems to whorl-owner at lists.best.com"
