          "text": "This is Sean Whalen (prion).\n\nI was just wondering about the names of the cities in the Whorl and\ntheir meaning.\n\nViron:  Latin for a circle, center.  Viron is surrounded by other\ncities in circular pattern.  Suggests the word environ.\n\nLimna:  Latin for the edge.  It's at the edge of Viron.\n\nPalustria:  Latin for swampy place.  Surrounded by swamps.\n\nGens:  Latin for a family line, a clan.\n\nUrbs:  Latin for city.\n\nUr:  Name of an ancient city on Earth.\n\nWick:  Just what it says, as far as I know.\n\nTrivigaunte:  I don't know about this.  Can anyone help?\n\n\nprion"

          "text": "When I first read the books, I assumed that as 'Whorl' was a neolgism\ndescribing a World that Whirls, 'Viron' was once short for environment, in\nthe sense of \"artificial environment\" or \"total environment\"--a lost\nreference to the artificiality of the Whorl.\n\nSince it turns out that 'Viron' is hardly the only city or even the\ncentral one, it doesn't really make sense that it would have that kind of\nname while the other cities don't.\n\n-Rostrum"
