I'm quoting the whole OED entry\nthis time, citations and all:\n\nSeverian (sI\"vI@rI@n).\n\n[ad. L. SeveŽriaŽn-€Ž (pl.), f. the name SeveŽrus (see below) + -ian.]\n\n1. A member of an Encratite or Gnostic sect of the 2nd century which\ncondemned marriage, etc.\n\n‘It may reasonably be doubted whether there really was an Encratite teacher\nnamed Severus, or whether sects did not merely get the Latin name of\nSeverians from the austerity of their rule of life’ (Smith’s Dict.
