Wolfe's "New Sun": Severian Unmasked!

This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

Who do you believe was Severian's mother? I read a good argument once
(can't remember where offhand) to the effect that his mother was the
Autarch. (The Autarch Severian succeeded on the throne is the only Autarch
mentioned in the story with neither name nor epithet. The Autarch refers to
Severian as "My son". One could argue that the Autarch androgyny may just
as well have come about through being deprived of femininity, as through
being deprived of masculinity.)
