Close Reading: Torturer Chapter I

This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that Severian is Captain of Apprentices
for only one year; if I'm right, we'll come to the appropriate reference
as we go through the book. And he has very little to "master" as
captain -- he finds his work that year very light.

Still, that makes it at least a year and a half from the graveyard
sequence to the encounter with Vodalus in the wood.

The main action, Severian's wanderings, takes only a few months.
