This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything
here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer
encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the
archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those
repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is
for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site,
so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

Bringing the New Sun is their goal; but who says that it's their *only* goal? Well said. As anyone who has worked in a bureaucracy knows, the goal, the purpose and the function may all be at odds with each other. Granting the hierodules better coordination than some bureaucracies, it leaves us with the orientation that some things are not and will not be known. And I find Wolfe's advance to that part of the compass marked "unknown", as well as his elegant prose and evident compassion, to be a major reason to keep returning to his work. > > If the hierodules are behind the autarchy, why do they still do things > like support Baldanders expressly so he can grow fat with knowledge > and die, dispersing his knowledge to others? Farmers will "rotate" crops planting great fields whose purpose is not to be harvested but to stay in place and prepare the soil for the next harvest. May we reason by analogy from here as well? I wonder. > _______________________________________________ > Urth Mailing List > To post, write urth at urth.net > Subscription/information: http://www.urth.net > -- Dan'l Danehy-Oakes, writer, trainer, bon vivant ----- http://www.livejournal.com/users/sturgeonslawyer http://www.danehyoakes.com Soon, where Toon Town once stood will be a string of gas stations, inexpensive motels, restaurants that serve rapidly prepared food. Tire salons, automobile dealerships and wonderful, wonderful billboards reaching as far as the eye can see. My God, it'll be beautiful. _______________________________________________ Urth Mailing List To post, write urth at urth.net Subscription/information: http://www.urth.net _________________________________________________________________ Can?t afford to quit your job? ?
