Joel,

As another "aspiring writer" (a few short story sales to my name, some
years ago), I have also found Wolfe a problematic model. He's easy to
parody but hard to pastiche, if you see what I mean.

I'm not sure about him being a "writer for puzzle solvers" -- though I do
enjoy crosswords, anacrostics, sudoku, etc. I think he's a writer for people
who want their fiction to resemble the "real" world in its being both
overdetermined and underdetermined.
