This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

I don't think so. I believe Joe is a man, which is why he looked to Gene for
confirmation that they would both eventually die. Joe came "out of the
ground" only in the sense that Adam did. That's the why of the "Dust to
dust" comment made by Gene.

Keep in mind that Wolfe *never* retells a story the same way he first heard
it. The Eden story seems to be mixed up here with the Christmas story. Mark
may well be a fallen angel, but he is a lesser angel than Lucifer.

I don't pretend to understand what point Wolfe intended to make with this
story. Like you, I can see the creature before the fire as an angel somehow
concerned with the imminent anniversary of the birth of Christ; and Mark,
Gene and Joe as latter-day Magi. But the red flames and the comparison of
the horned figure to a Viking or a devil say something else. Or so I see it.
