This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. I very much agree with what you've said as far as the meanings of the books.

I'd also add that Wolfe's evasiveness is pretty understandable in that he clearly wants the reader to THINK and interpret for him or herself, and questions to the author to "settle" this question or that tend to just be ways of short-circuiting that process. Not to mention there is something of a question as to whether what the author says (or originally intended) can actually settle such a question at all if the text itself can't settle it.
