How list works and questions to mailers

Russ Allbery · 13 May 2008, 05:02 · from 2008-May.txt.gz

This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

Iron Council is by general consensus not the high point of that series. I
liked both Perdido Street Station and The Scar in different ways. The
Scar is the better book, but Perdido Street Station has some *amazing*
descriptions. Iron Council was much more explicitly political (Mieville
has a doctorate in international relations from the London School of
Economics and is a Trotskyist), so if the politics of Bas Lag aren't your
thing, it's probably not going to be your thing. But don't let that turn
you off on his other stuff, some of which is really quite good even if you
can't stand his politics at all.
