The Severian Behind Curtain #3

This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

Huh. My second thought after reading that was about the scene depicted on an
inner door of the Old Autarch's whorehouse: "It had a stained-glass insert
showing the Temptation." (SHADOW, IX, second page) Three possibilities for
the subject matter come to mind; Eve with the "apple" in the Garden; Jesus
in the wilderness; Severian on Mt. Typhon. This last can be reasonably
dismissed because it would not happen until more than a year in the future;
only revivified Typhon and Sev would be there, and only Sev would live to
tell the tale. So what did the picture show?
