"Goodbye Old Buddy" -- Pirate Freedom murder mystery, take two

This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

That's correct, I think. This is a commonplace in science fiction and
fantasy. In fact, you can write a whole alternative biography of Edgar Rice
Burroughs (and someone has, though I forget where I read it) based on the
information he gives you in the forewords to his various books about meeting John
Carter, and so forth. Wolfe likes to play with this kind of stuff, as his
introduction to the Latro books indicates.
