This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Exactly. Severian doesn't know what a photograph is. But a painting at least can be recreated and copied so the image (the icon, if you will) lasts chiliads.

Plus, it is specifically called a "painting," if I remember correctly, no? Still, that could be another case of words with broader uses like "sailor" or "ship." I don't recall there being actual photography mentioned anywhere in New Sun by which to make a distinction.
