This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

I say David is the "control" because N5 is actually the subject of the 
experiment. David and Jeanine represent "all the other people on the 
planet". Maitre is uninterested in them. N5 and his forebearers are the 
puzzle. They don't advance in influence despite their superior 
intellect, resources, and scientific method. You've put your finger on 
the problem, though...the experiment should be examining the types of 
people who have advanced without the clones' advantages using clones as 
the control. This is hinted at in N5's dream: They don't advance because 
they have been engineered not to.

Having read 'Fifth Head' first, I was quite skeptical of the viability 
C. Doctorow's society in "Down & Out in the Magic Kingdom" which 
accomplishes much the same thing by turning everyone into Mr. Millions.
