Appearances of Inire

This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

Technically, most published books have several pages printed on a large
sheet of paper that is called a signature when it is folded for
attachment to others to form a volume. They are (or were) then cut into
separate leaves to give the reader access to the pages otherwise
concealed within the folds.

The Book Club edition of SotL, for instance, has 16 signatures by my
count, accounting for the 279 pages of story, 1 about the author, and 8
front matter if they alternate 10 leaves as in the first signature with
8 leaves as in the last. There are two more protective blank leaves of
sturdier paper which are actually part of the end papers glued inside
the covers.
