This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. No, the issue in this thread is whether it was explained in terms so
*un*convincing that you were right to call it 'a half-baked theory' or
'only understood 20 years after the book was published'.

Neither of these things is true. As Dan'l says, it's debatable whether
it should be classed as a puzzle at all.
