This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. The recent discussed inspired me to recheck the relevant text on the origin of
Hierogrammates.  I think this sequence is a good example of what David Stockhoff 
and I mean by Wolfe giving an answer with one hand and doubt in the other:

So, did Urth's race of humans create the Hierogrammates or some other, cognate race? Is it 
possible to say? Is one more answer more likely than another?
