This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

"...like every man whose foot is in a trap." So he admits he will lie to 
get out of a trap, and the algae explanation comes when he is hopeful 
Severian will help him get out. However, telling the truth in a way it 
will not be believed is also a method lying, and fits in with his 
practice of driving off patrons with dire fortunes.

The same way it apparently allows for contemporary humans to have wisdom 
teeth, appendixes, male nipples, sense of humor, musical aptitude, etc.
