This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. I did, with caveats. I read it mainly as a "character" novel, rather than a
"plot" novel. That's fine for me, but while some of the character work is
pretty good, Wolfe really isn't top-notch as a character writer, IMO (Having
been on a heavy Trollope diet for a while, I'm spoiled in this regard). The
world and plot "furniture" all has a slightly recycled feeling; if you
didn't know better, it'd be easy to guess that it was one of those dystopian
future novels from the 1970's.

Overall, I'd say not as enjoyable as Sorcerer's House, but more
enjoyable than the first half of AEG (ie, before the beautiful writing of
the second half kicks in and the deli sandwiches disappear).
