Geography of the Whorl

David Stockhoff · 21 Apr 2011, 23:15 · from 2011-April.txt.gz

This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

Very roughly, yes. Not that it would mean much anyway. But Silk seems to
be the closest thing to an overtly Christian character anywhere in
Wolfe. His world seems more than vaguely Mediterranean in climate and
culture as well. If the Commonwealth is patterned in part after South
America, then surely the Whorl could have had another model that we can
identify.

I could be wrong about the shape of the lake anyway. But I recall the
town is at one end of it.

Which may or may not be a salt lake, depending on whether Typhon wanted to send any Urth saltwater species along (it seems to be large for the Whorl, although Wolfe doesn't say whether there are other lakes like it). Is anyone else reminded of a certain place on Earth?
