Lame Protagonists

This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

Thanks Jeff. I think the left hand is clearly shown to be complete. Unfortunately,
like every other photo I've found, the right hand shot may leave room for the ring
finger to be missing the top piece. Deliberate posing and photo cropping? Or coincidence?
Perhaps I'll never know.

FWIW, my curiosity on this subject was first piqued not by the story itself as much as the
Foreword to the second edition of LOTR where Tolkien notes about the writing of the book-

>"And it had to be typed and re-typed: by me; the cost of professional typing by the
>ten-fingered was beyond my means"

Perhaps he only meant "ten-fingered" in contrast to his own two-finger hunt and peck
method. But the nine-fingered condition of both the the primary hero and primary villain
of the story has always made me wonder about this.
