This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. I think he can do both, and does. One simply can't depict a colorful, 
spectacular, empty religion without fingering any number of religions at 
their worst moments. Every religion has those worst moments. At least 
let's agree the Byzantine church is a suspect!

I hear you on the papal authority thing. It seems very odd for Wolfe to 
believe in it, since he attaches so much importance and authority to 
people's trying to come to grips with divinity without knowing "the 
truth." But there it is.
