Severian as Jonah

Marc Aramini · 16 Apr 2012, 20:45 · from 2012-April.txt.gz

This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

WOW digging that quote.

The city searches the sky for a sign, but no sign shall it have but the sign from the fish?s belly.

Haven't read the gospels in too long.

Marc, I understand your qualms about Jonah's moral unsuitability. ?But the program is hardly going out on a limb here, as this comparison has a long history. ?Heck, it's even in the Bible, apparently in Christ's own words:

"An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.?For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale's belly, so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth"?(Matthew 12:40)
