I am pretty adamant about Eastwind surviving but not knowing who he is.  That is the key point.  Also, metaphorically his lack of testes but still being called an ancestor of Trenchard (12 walker) only allows one reproductive option - that option open to viruses and parasites - appropriating the reproductive mechanism of another to complete the life cycle.
