I do view eastwind as a metaphor, however.  Not sure how closely these two species are biologically, but I see eastwind as a symbol of airborne propagation even though he is not a shadow child.  I recognize the difference between their life cycles, I simply see him as an aboriginal symbol of who lives on as Marsch- the at one time airborne shadow child rather than the walking aborigine.
