This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. I will slightly disagree. More specifically I think the question is whether 
some of those details relate ONLY to Silk as a character and not at all to
plot or themes. Such details can perform double and triple duties, and with
Wolfe I think they often do.

I think it is a good proposal and one well worth considering. We can never know
what Wolfe's conscious intentions, not to mention any subconscious intentions, 
were during his writing. Surely some of Wolfe's writing is meant to perform only
tne single duty of character development. But which?

Perhaps there is consensus on some lupine issues, but where there is disagreement
and debate I am willing to guess that Wolfe's own answer, as a caring author,
might be, 

"Whichever way makes it a better read for you". ??? ??? ??? ? ??? ??? ?

maybe in an introduction and in a theory, but I have in the past received responses like "NO NO NO" from him ... just throwing that out there.
