This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Those repairs are judgements and some of them are wrong, which is what this page is for. Email addresses are obscured here as they are everywhere else on the site, so it is before our repairs rather than byte for byte.

For the educated classes in the Commonwealth, the substance would be 
reasonably familiar,  Probably not so much for the common people, But I 
don't see any issue with the use of a new technical name for it.  Mars 
and Venus have new names, why not mercury?

Also, if Severian is familiar with mercury, shouldn't he explain to us 
why hydrargyrum is superior for weighting swords?

If it's not different, what does it matter if it is something else? 
Sure, some future EPA may have banned the use of mercury, but if so it's 
been replaced by a new material that to all intents and purposes is 
exactly the same!
