This is the message as the crawl holds it, before anything here touched it. What the conversation shows has been through ingest: transfer encodings decoded, attachments dropped, quote markers repaired, and the archiver’s ? resolved into quotation marks and dashes. Unwashed philistines to mean uncultured people was quite common at one time, or sometimes just used by the upper class to mean working class people.

That's a part of it; the David and Goliath metaphor is built into our culture and of course Goliath was champion of the Philistines. IIRC this was also used to mean uncultured readers by a 19thC literary magazine, but I can't locate the reference just now.
